It was broad daylight, yet light refused to pierce the darkness within the looming boughs before me. They reached out like the ancient arms of lost souls, their spindly hands breaking out of the gloom, searching blindly for the hope and life lost so long ago. The fog poured forth from the unseen depths within, and the forest itself seemed to be within Death’s icy grasp. There was an uneasy feeling about the whole place; it seemed dead yet somehow alive. Part of me was screaming, telling me to run away from this godforsaken place and never return; but I wouldn’t have been here without reason. I stepped forward into the forest, ready to face whatever fate had in store for me.
